TSOM: The State of Mind is a real-time neurofeedback experience that transforms brain signals into dynamic, abstract 3D visuals. Using EEG data captured from the scalp, TSOM processes and interprets the user's emotional state and renders it as a living, breathing visual representation — one that shifts and evolves as the mind does.
The project sits at the intersection of neuroscience, creative technology, and mindfulness. It gives users something rarely accessible outside a lab: a mirror for the mind.
TSOM reads electrical activity from the brain using the Muse EEG headband, a consumer-grade device that captures signals from the scalp. These raw signals are processed through custom algorithms that identify emotional states and mental patterns. The processed data is then sent to a real-time visual engine built in TouchDesigner, which generates 3D generative art that responds dynamically to the user's current state of mind.
When the user's state shifts — from restless to focused, anxious to calm — the visuals transform in response: colors, shapes, motion, and intensity all change to reflect what's happening inside.
TSOM is designed for meditation and mindfulness. By providing immediate visual feedback, it allows users to observe how different stimuli, thoughts, and breathing patterns affect their mental state. Over time, users can learn to influence and shift their own state of mind — training the brain through the loop of awareness, observation, and control.
It answers a simple but powerful question: what does my mind look like right now, and what can I do to change it?
